Pacific Games Facilities best in the Region
Pacific Games Council President Vidhya Lakhan has described the 2015 Pacific Games sporting facilities in Papua New Guinea as one of the best in the region.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 15th Pacific Games in Port Moresby Saturday night, Lakhan said the facilities exceed the Pacific Games Council expectations.
“I commend Prime Minister Honourable Peter O’Neill and his Government for the excellent facilities that are being provided for these Games.
“There is no doubt that the facilities for the 2015 Port Moresby Games are the best we have seen so far in this region and they all have far exceeded our expectations,” Lakhan told thousands of people that attended the Opening ceremony.
Lakhan said as the largest premier event, which brings together the peoples of the Pacific Islands nations every four years, the Pacific Games, continues to grow in stature.
The Pacific Games has returned to Papua New Guinea for the third time since its inception in 1963.
“The 2015 Port Moresby Pacific Games is of historic significance. For the very first time in the history of our Games, we welcome the participation of Australian and New Zealand athletes in the Pacific Games.
“In welcoming you to these Games, my Council and I wish you every success and hope that you will enjoy the hospitality of Papua New Guinea and that you will return home with fond memories of the Pacific Games,” Lakhan said.
Lakhan said today sport plays a very significant role in many ways in building a better world for tomorrow.
“Sport is not only seen but is now recognized as perhaps the best medium to promote the values of excellence, respect and friendship in tackling some of the social problems facing us today.
“The scene has been set for what promises to be an excellent Games. Over the next two weeks the sporting world will be focusing on our Games, our athletes and our host Nation Papua New Guinea.
“Therefore it is our moment in time to showcase ourselves as true ambassadors of our respective sports, as true ambassadors of our respective countries participating in these Games promoting the ideals of fair play, showing respect for your fellow athletes whilst striving for excellence.
“In the Pacific Way, on behalf of my Executive and the Games Council I wish you all a very safe and successful Games,” said Lakhan….PACNEWS.
