ADDRESSING MATERNAL MORTALITY IN PNG

Four out of a 100 women die from maternal mortality everyday in PNG and this statistics has put a huge strain on Medical Practitioners in the country.
This was revealed at today’s presentations at the 51st Medical Symposium held at the Caritas Multi-purpose hall in Port Moresby.
The Research Reports was presented by three female Doctor’s, Dr Morris of Modilon Hospital, Dr Sanga of Goroka Hospital and Dr Menke of Port Moresby General Hospital.
According Dr Sanga from the research carried out in Upper Bena area of EHP by PNG Institute of Medical Research, alarmingly, 342, 900 estimated maternal deaths occur every year in PNG with only 78 percent of women attend Antenatal Clinics, while 22 percent CHOOSE not to.
She said the methods they are using are community based intervention study and community awareness in rural areas, which is effectively working on most women who are now aware of risks involved in not having proper child birth care.
Out of the 200 women used in the research, 115 chose to use the Clean Birth Kit provided, 85 did not while 112 used Self Administered Misoprostol treatment and 88 did not.
Dr Sanga said, from these reports it clearly show how much effect the awareness programs are vital for our women folks in rural areas.
