Prime Minister Peter O'Neill welcomes supreme court ruling
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has welcome the Supreme Court decision nullifying changes to sections 142 and 145 of the Constitution, regarding the Vote of No Confidence.
Mr. O'Neill says the parties respect the court decision, however, it's important that the reasons behind the amendments are understood as it's an issue that will likely return in future.
The High Court had ruled on Friday that the 2012 and 2013 amendments to the constitution regarding motions of no confidence against the government were unconstitutional.
Section 142 relates to increasing notice period for motions of no confidence from seven days to 21 days, while Section 145 increases the Grace period from 18 months to 30 months, before a vote of no confidence can be introduced against a prime minister.
Mr. O'Neill says the legislation was designed to further enhance stability in the government of the nation now and into the future.
He says responsible leaders must strive to provide ongoing leadership and stability, and not allow the country to revert back to decades of instability, where investors refused to do business with P-N-G and growth was undermined.
