Polye backs Somare for referring Prime Minister O'Neill and MPs to Watch Dog
PORT MORESBY: Opposition Leader Don Polye has welcomed the referral of bureaucrats and politicians including himself by Sir Michael Somare to the Ombudsman Commission for playing a part in removing the latter as the Prime Minister in 2011.
“Sir Michael, as the founding father, has done a right thing to uphold the integrity of the constitutional offices and rule of law because the Constitution has been breached at many instances by those in power,” Mr Polye told reporters in Port Moresby this week.
Mr Polye said the government, which he was part of, was formed after the General Elections with the spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness to observe the laws.
Polye said the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill does not only seem to care about rule of law, observance of laws and conventions, but also not to respect the institutions which uphold and enforce laws in the country.
He added that Mr O’Neill has to be reminded of the existence of these laws, saying the founding fathers are fed up with the serial breaking of laws.
The referral, he said, showed that Sir Michael was upset about the breaking of laws by young politicians and was a reflection of careless and irresponsible conduct of the Prime Minister.
“So much has been gagged and constitutional offices have gone through many interferences, manipulations and compromise.
“What the Prime Minster has been doing to buy time has frustrated the justice system and it was not in the best interest of our people,” he said.
Polye said such behaviours were an embarrassment to the global community, urging the Prime Minister to refrain from casting fear into the minds of everyone with threats.
“Such conducts of the irresponsible Prime Minister must come to an end. We are sick and tired of him.
“The Opposition stands united to support the principles of democracy, Constitution, fight corruption among others,” he said.
