Brisbane Broncos Aid PNG Development

​MICHAEL Marum was shown every courtesy by the Brisbane Broncos' training staff during a development trip last week.

In fact the coach of the Papua New Guinea Hunters in the Queensland Cup was even driven around by coach Wayne Bennett.

Through his brother Bob, who was once the coach of the PNG national side, Bennett has always had a link to rugby league in the one country in the world where it is the national sport.

So giving Marum an insight into the working of the Broncos was a request he was happy to agree to.

"It was exciting," said Marum.

"I was really pleased to come down and observe all the training sessions and the gym sessions.

"I had the privilege to drive around with Wayne - he picked me up every morning.

"It was a really exciting week."

Marum and the Hunters had an outstanding 2015, just falling short of a maiden grand final appearance in only their second year in the Intrust Super Cup competition.

They were beaten in the QRL preliminary final by eventual State and Australian club champions, the Ipswich Jets.

In 2015 they will be an even tougher proposition for visiting teams, with a brand new stadium in Port Moresby to be their home ground.

Over 15,000 screaming fans are expected at every game.

But for Marum, the focus for his players will be on the basics - something he noticed the Broncos working hard on last week.

"There are higher standards here so I hope to bring back a few things to the Hunters," he said.

"The main things are working on their basics.

"It is really good to see how professional the Broncos players are and how they conduct themselves."
