Some Papua New Guineans underwent vital corrective heart surgery over the past week during the Operation Open Heart (OOH), which was made possible by generous donations from organisations like Bank of South Pacific BSP who are lending a helping hand.
A total of 19 Australian medical professionals have been in Port Moresby since Sunday February 7th. Six Papua New Guinean specialists including Noah Tapaua Dr Elisabeth Alok, Dr Cornelia Kilalang, Professor Nakapi Tefuarani, Professor Sir Isi Kevau and Dr Jack Amina.
The OOH is held annually, and for 2016, there will be two scheduled visits. The first is underway and the next will be held in July.
BSP made a donation of K100, 000 to OOH and surely the patients consider this an early Valentine’s Day gift.
The bank’s donation was made by Deputy General Manager Human Resources, Hari Rabura. "Many people will have a second chance at life, thanks to the OOH, and BSP is honoured to support such a worthy cause. I also thank everyone involved in the program," she said.
Since its inception 23 years ago, over 980 patients have had lifesaving surgeries, including open and closed heart surgery.
OOH Chair Kathy Johnston stressed that the program is also now focusing more on developing local Cardiologists and their surgery teams.
“This program is all about building capacity and capabilities of our PNG doctors, enabling them to have develop skills and knowledge,” Mrs Johnston.
“Without the tremendous support of corporate organisations, OOH will not be a success. And especially for BSP, it is wonderful to see that our leading bank is continuing this special relationship,” she added.
