PM O'Neill clarifies Increase in election nomination fees

Intending candidates have raised concerns over talks that nomination fees would increase in the coming general elections.

Central Governor Kila Haoda raised the concerns to the PM Peter O’Neill in parliament on behalf of his people contesting the 2017 general elections.

PM Peter O’Neill in his response, said the proposal to increase nomination fees from K1000 to K10, 000 was still been discussed by parliament and not yet endorsed by the Electoral Commission as a matter of amendment.

PM O’Neill explained that it was necessary for the amendments as election exercises were costly and the increase would assist Electoral Commission to generate funds for the elections in instances of costs over run during the elections.

The increase was not intended to marginalize candidates but for proper running of the elections in general.
