Tonga signs agreement with China to build Tonga High School Sports Complex
Tonga has signed an agreement of TOP$55 million with the Government of the People’s Republic China to build Tonga High School Sports Complex for the 2019 Pacific Games.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for MEIDECC and Foreign Affairs Hon Siaosi Sovaleni expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chinese Government for funding the significant project for the upcoming Pacific Games.
Hon Sovaleni said that the project is a very important one towards the Pacific Games 2019 and thanked the delegation and senior officials for their efforts in the last month in progressing this agreement.
Tonga High School Complex includes one indoor stadium, one outdoor rugby field, four outdoor netball courts, aquatics center, one lawn bowling field and supporting facilities surrounding the sporting venues with total area of 9,180 square meters.
Chinese Ambassador to Tonga H.E. Mr. Huang Huaguang noted that so far this will be the largest project the Chinese Government will be funding.
A design team from China consisted of 15 members are also in Nuku’alofa to inspect the site.
The construction is due to commence in October this year and is expected to be completed by May 2019.
