Sir Julius Chan is new PPP leader
The People's Progress Party has revealed that re-elected New Ireland Governor, Sir Julius Chan is now the new leader of the party.
Party General Secretary, Moses Kar revealed this to NBC News this morning, saying Sir Julius was elected the party leader last Wednesday, and that all members of the party should be following the leadership of the party leader.
"Our party constitution says the Parliamentary Wing will elect the party leader, and it is on that ground that the Parliamentary Wing elected the leader (Sir J) following the ousting of Ben Micah in the election.
"We needed a leader with the formation of government, and so the members got together and agreed that Sir J should lead."
But the Registrar of Political Parties and Candidates, Dr Alphonse Gelu, says he has no knowledge of this new development with the PPP and that his office is yet to be informed of it.
Meantime, the People's Progress Party is calling for the return of one of its members.
Following his declaration on Friday, North Fly member-elect, James Donald had taken up camp in Kokopo with the group led by the National Alliance, the PANGU and other coalition partners.
But the Party General Secretary, Moses Kar says, Mr Donald had been dragged to Kokopo and must be returned.
"We (the PPP) had prepared him with ticket to fly in when this thing happened in Kiunga.
"We have never experienced this where MP's have been dragged off without their consent and conscience.
"Our member Mr Donald is still a strong PPP man and he should return because the party remains solid and stable and it would be good if the member returns to the party to serve in the government."
Word out of Kokopo is that Mr Donald and his South Fly counterpart PLP's Sekie Agisa and Governor-elect Taboi Awi Yoto of the URP, are enjoying themselves, dispelling rumours of being "kidnapped" and "dragged" into camp. NBC/PNG Today
