PM O'Neill congretulates Hunters Captain Ase Boas - Player of The Year in the Intrust Super Cup
The Prime Minister and Minister for Sports, Peter O’Neill , has congratulated the PNG Hunters captain, Ase Boas, on being named the best and fairest player in the Intrust Super Cup competition.
PM O'Neill said the award was an historic one, as it was the first time a Papua New Guinean player had won the most coveted honour in the Queensland Rugby League's Intrust Super Cup competition.
“I congratulate Ase Boas for the effort that he has put in throughout the season to be named Best and Fairest.
“He has played good solid football and earned respect of teams and spectators around the league.”
The Prime Minister further congratulated Ase Boas on winning the People's Choice Award, and Hunters coach, Michael Marum, on being named Coach of the Year.
"The Hunters are more than just a highly successful rugby league team, they are outstanding ambassadors for Papua New Guinea," he said.
“They attract some of the biggest crowds in the competition, not only in Papua New Guinea, but also when they play in Australia.
"These are not only spectators from the Papua New Guinea community in Queensland, but rugby league fans who turn out to see raw football talent at its best.
“Ever since the Hunters entered the QRL's Intrust Super Cup the team had been highly competitive and this is only achieved through hard work and dedication.
"I know the whole nation joins with me in congratulating both the captain and coach on their awards, and their leadership of the Hunters.”
After winning the minor premiership for the 2017 season, PM O'Neill said the nation is now preparing to cheer the Hunters on to get through to the Grand Final.
“Papua New Guineans, as well as many Queenslanders, will be right behind the Hunters as they give it their all in the finals.
“We all wish the Hunters the very best for the finals series, and we hope to see them making and winning the Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on 24 September.
“Rugby League is our National sport, and we are all very proud of our PNG Hunters.”
