King of Tonga officially appoints Pohiva as Prime Minister
Tongan King Tupou VI has appointed the Prime Minister-Designate, Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, as the Prime Minister of Tonga, with effect from 2 January, 2018.
Prior to being re-elected as Prime Minister by the Legislative Assembly, following the 2017 General Election, Pohiva served as the 16th Prime Minister from 2015-2017.
Pohiva is the longest-serving People’s Representative and Member of Parliament, since he was first elected into the Legislative Assembly in 1987.
He has held various Ministerial portfolios in the previous Government administrations, as the former Minister for Health, Minister for Education and Training, Minister for Internal Affairs and Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister Pohiva will serve his second term in office from 2018-2021, as the 17th Prime Minister of Tonga. LoopTonga
