Shop raided by city authorities, served warning notice over selling rotten meat

A team of environmental health officers from the National Capital District Commission raided a shop at Konedobu this morning and dumped the confiscated food items at a dog pound in Waigani.

They intervene swiftly following a post on Facebook complaining about rotten packets of lamb flaps being sold on its shelves.

Senior Environmental Health Officer, Silas Johnathan, whose scope of work covers Moresby-South electorate, said he read the complaint on Tuesday night, adding he assured fellow residents that he would undertake to attend to it this morning.

“This morning, we attended to it and confirmed the allegations as true. Even the shop manager was not aware of the issue as he was obviously not performing his duties as expected,” he said in an email to officers from Investment Promotion Authority.

Mr Johnathan said they subsequently issued a warning notice on the spot to the management of Desh Besh and thoroughly removed the whole items in the freezers and brought them over to the dog pound.

“The alleged shop and others will closely be monitored during our routine inspection to avoid re-occurrence of the same practice.
“However,we also appeal to city residents to report immediately to City Hall ( Health Division) of any allegations on food safety or public health issues for that matter or contact us on Telephone: 323 3212 / 3240 637 or NCDC Toll Free number: 1800002,” he said.
