Government intact despite Party Members resigning, says PM O'Neill

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says his Government is stable and intact and has thanked those Members of Parliament who resigned from his ruling PNC Party today.

He said he was aware of their move today and respected that, adding that it was their own decision to leave.

Mr O’Neill also said with respect to People’s Party Members resigning, it was always an understanding for them to go together to form a stable government since 2012.

But O’Neill also said that frankly, he was yet to see policy proposals in writing or otherwise in the past eight years.

“We are aware of this and we respect the decisions made by each individual Member of Parliament,” he said.

“This is their mandated decision and it is obviously their right.”

“However, as the Leader of the Party, and Leader of Government I can assure the people that our party got large numbers in Parliament and within a large Party, there’s always movements.

“In the case of Governor Peter Ipatas, we have had a solid understanding in 2012 that the members of the Party will return to People’s Party and that they will assist PNC in forming a stable government,” he said.

“We respect the decision of Governor Ipatas and his team and we look forward in working with them into the future.

” In respect to the other Governors and Members of Parliament that resigned, it is their decision and they have to explain that to their own people. They were elected to Parliament under the mandate of PNC. PNC has supported them in many ways than one so that they can retain their positions and their role as Members of Parliament. We look forward to working closely with them over the next two years and we will allow the people to make their own decisions when election comes.

“It has been a pleasure working with many of them and I understand the difficulties in some of the decisions that we have taken, and of course, on the policies of the government that they disagree with,” he said.

“But quite frankly, I have yet to see policy proposal in writing or otherwise made to government in the past eight years.

” But in any case, we respect their decision and we look forward to seeing them in Parliament in the coming weeks as we continue the normal business of our government.

” I want to assure the people of Papua New Guinea that despite a little bit of movements in the floor of Parliament and in the party (PNC), I can assure you that our government is very stable in the sense that we got quiet a large  number and I am also aware that the Opposition will make a big noise out of this.

“It is given that the Government will always lose numbers and the Opposition will always gain because of the differences a large grouping can make.

” And it is only fitting that we continue to deliver on the good key policies that we have. Our Government is, in history of our country, has delivered very visible projects and policies both in infrastructure, health and education, developing districts and provinces, and making sure that this builds a very solid economy, an economy that is going to create opportunities for our future.

“Our country has got a bright future but only selfish and self indulgence politics will continue to destroy and derail the developing agenda that our country deserves.

” But all in all we are happy to work with these members despite our differences, we will work for our people and look forward to working with them over the next few years, when we face our people in 2022,” O’Neill said.

The Prime Minister is currently in China on an official visit.
