PNG Hunters finally win at home
The SP PNG Hunters have registered a first win at by holding off fast finishing Souths Logan Magpies with a two point win (24 – 22) .
Debutant Terry Wapi was one of the stars in their win with a try on debut, a try assist and a grew line breaks in a breakthrough performance.
Silas Gahuna, Justin Yoka, and Nicky Hasu also shone off the back of a strong forwards performance led by captain Moses Meninga and Enoch Maki.
The Hunters got off to a bad start when Brendan Gotuno was sent to the bin in the 7th minute for holding back a Magpies player in a race to the ball in the Hunters try zone.
Despite the magpies extra man the Hunters were able to hold them off.
In the next set some good barnstorming runs got the Hunters into the Magpies half which forced a penalty.
The Hunters went to the Magpies right edge twice in three plays and on the second Gairo Kapana dived through to score with Terry Wapi delivering the final pass for a 4 – 0 .
In the 17th minute Silas Gahuna makes a break from dummy half but is held on the Magpies 30 metre line. In the ensuing play the ball finds Terry Wapi who sends a huge dummy and runs through to score under the posts. The try is converted for 10 – 0 scoreline.
Unfazed by the scoreline the Magpies showed determination to get back into the contest and in the 22nd minute Mitch Fray would stroll through a gap to score for the visitors. The converted try left the scores at 10 – 6.
The try was a momentum changer as the Magpies mounted pressure after pressure against the Hunters line and at the 30th minute succeeded when winger Matt Soper-Lawler raced to the hunters left edge to score. The conversion missed for a 10 all score.
The Hunters were still in the match and two minutes before half time Hunters Captain Moses Meninga scored another try under the post from a Justin Yoka grubber. Nicky Hasu converts for a 16 – 10 lead going into half time.
Four minutes into the second half Matt Soper-Lawler would intercept a Terry Wapi pass and run 90 metres to score a converted try to level the scores at 16 all.
In the 48th minute Junior Rau would sneak through three players to pick up a Justin Yoka grubber to score for the Hunters to take the lead again 22 – 16.
Four minutes later the Hunters would take two penalty points after the Magpies were penalized for slowing the play the ball in front of their goal posts for a 24 -16 score. This followed a Terry Wapi break.
In the 57th minute the Magpies Alex Bishop scored for the visitors after sustained pressure on the Hunters line. The converted try brought the scores 24 – 22.
The remainder of the match remained a tussle with the Magpies throwing a lot at the Hunters but the home side defended strongly to secure their second win of the season. PNG Leage/ PNG Today
