WHP Governor Winti hails Prime Minister Peter O'Neill

Former Papua New Guinea Prime Ministers and Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti has described Peter O’Neill as the only Prime Minister who had really brought development to the most rural areas of the country in his seven or eight years as Prime Minister.

And the former prime minister also urged Members of Parliament to respect the Office of the Prime Minister and not to personally attack the person holding that office.

Wingti first from Right
“Our Prime Minister had served seven or eight years for those seven or eight years the people of our country have seen changes that have taken place right throughout the country, leadership requires a man who is determined and works day and night to get that done.

“But we the people have short memories, we forget about what stage our country was seven years ago,” he said.

That brought a point of order by the member for Madang Bryan Kramer, who asked if he had gone to a hospital, or had sent his child to the hospital, what school his child had attended?

His point of order was ruled out of order by the Speaker and the Governor was asked to continue.

Governor Wingti said in response that there were many things in Parliament today that were not right.

These included the differentiation of the Office of the Prime Minister and person holding that office.

“We are saying things and doing things that are not protocol, not ethical, not right, the differences must be drawn, this is a young country, whoever that is incoming Prime Minister, let us respect that office,” he said.

In PNG tradition, he said, Papua New Guineans respect people and the Prime Minister’s Office must be respected at all times because it belonged to the people.

“For this Prime Minister I salute you,” he said.
