Police Officer Charged for Assaulting Pregnant Wife

A police officer has been charged with unlawful assault after beating his pregnant wife.

Constable Austin Mavuk, 31 from New Ireland Province, attached with the Rabaul Police was suspended for 21 days.

East New Britain Provincial police commander Chief Inspector Joseph Tabali said the incident occurred early this month at the Toguata Police Barracks outside Kokopo.

It is alleged the officer who was under the influence of alcohol.

Mr Tabali said the officer’s arrest and suspension should be a warning to other police officers to stop such unlawful behaviours.

''I will not have my police officers under my command to do that.

"Former Police Commissioner Gary Baki has declared this year as year of discipline and I still maintained this.

"Before we police officers go out and arrest people I have to clean my backyard first," said Mr Tabali.

The suspended officer is expected to appear for mention this Friday at the Kokopo Committal Court.
