PNG Electoral Commissioner Gamato out on Bail

PNG Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato has been released on bail after his lawyers had sought application at the National Court to have him released from custody

The National Court today converted his K3000 Waigani District Bail to a National Court Bail and released him with conditions, after he was detained at the Boroko Police Cell last Thursday, before being transferred to Bomana Correctional facility the following day.

Mr. Gamato's bail was revoked and set aside last Thursday for breaching one of his bail conditions- for interfering with three State Witnesses, who are employees of the PNG Electoral Commission.

According to the court's order, Gamato shall take leave as the Electoral Commissioner and has been given a week to delegate his responsibilities to a senior officer, who will act in his place in the interim.

Mr. Gamato is expected to resume his office on the 24th of January, 2020.

Amongst the bail conditions, Mr. Gamato shall reside in NCD, shall not leave NCD without leave of the court, and shall not interfere with State Witnesses.

Mr. Gamato is facing charges of official corruption, and his matter will return before the Waigani Committal Court on December 18 this year.
