PNG Opposition Leader Namah prefers PNG Red-Cross to handle Australia Bushfire Donations

PNG's Opposition Leader Beldon Namah wishes to channeled his donations to the PNG Red Cross Society rather than the PNG Australia BushFires Appeal Secretariat which was set up by like-minded citizens.

This is despite an appeal from the Secretariate executives for all members of Parliament, organisations or individual who wish to make donations to channel them to the Secretariat.

Beldon Namah said PNG Red Cross is the right institution already established in the country and deals directly with disaster appeals and support victims in recovery exercises.

Namah said there is no point setting up new bodies to collect donations from people who wish to assist Australia.

This is because the PNG Red Cross Society has a strong network with the Australian Red Cross Society which is currently onsite assisting the fire victims.

He said from previous experiences, such bodies never directed donations, especially in-cash to where it is intended for.

"I have consulted the Australian High Commission before making my donations and they have directed me to PNG Red Cross Society, '' said Namah.

The Opposition leader said these when presenting a K100,000 cheque to the Secretary-General of the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society Uvenama Rova.

This is part of the commitment made by Mr. Namah towards the Australian Bush Fire Appeal.

Belden Namah whos also the member for Vanimo Green, clarified that the money is from the Vanimo/Green District in West Sepik Province.

Mr. Namah said the Vanimo/Green district appreciates the help from Australia for some of its services in the district thus driving them to help the victims of bush fires in Australia.

He also said the other K100, 000 commitment will be from the Office of the Opposition.

The Opposition Leader said there are some issues that need to be sorted out before the K100,000 from the Opposition will be released either later this week or early next week.

Secretary-General of the PNG Red Cross Society Uvenama Rova said the organization is so grateful for the kind gesture from the Vanimo/Green District.

Mr. Rova clarified that the cheque will be deposited into an account set up by the Australia Red Cross Society.

Present to witness the cheque presentation was the Vanimo Town Mayor Joey Tony and the President of Vanimo/Green LLG, Benard Yaurai with other officials from the District.
