PNG Govt assures of Preparedness against COVID-19
Papua New Guinea Government has released K10m for its COVID-19 or corona-virus Emergency Response Plan.
Deputy Prime Minister Davis Steven said on Saturday the K10m is part of the K45.33m the National Executive Council approved for the country to prepare and respond to the outbreak at the provincial and national levels.
Mr Steven said the balance will be released in the coming days so that all resources required to take care of any confirmed cases are procured and in place.
NEC has also established a COVID-19 Ministerial Committee chaired by the Minister for Health and HIV-AIDS Jelta Wong who will oversee the emergency plan.
Mr Steven said the Government has also established an inter-sectoral coordination Taskforce, chaired by Health Department.
"This Taskforce coordinates the operational aspects of the emergency preparedness and response activities by all agencies and reports to the Ministerial Committee," Mr Steven said.
The Government reactivated the National Emergency Operations Centre at Health Department and the Provincial Emergency Operations Centers to begin the emergency planning.
"So far border control and quarantine, surveillance and rapid response team, emergency ambulance, and isolation ward are in place. The quarantine facility will be operational in two to three weeks from today," Mr Steven said.
He said PNG has reported NO confirmed cases after having screened 17,500 travelers who've arrived in PNG so far.
Mr Steven added the World Health Organisation provided technical support and personal protection equipment and Australia donated personal protection equipment for the health and border officials.
New Zealand airlifted 17 students from Wuhan and Foreign Affairs is working with the Government of China to ensure that students in China are well looked after and brought home.
The Government is also asking citizens to practice proper hygiene and stay away from mass gatherings.
