Port Moresby Governor Parkop dismisses the myth of Coronavirus does not survive on hot and humid climates

Papua New Guinea's Port Moresby Governor  Powes Parkop has called on people to be critical about the information they consume about the Covid-19 pandemic.

He urged people not to believe in “myths” that are going around suggesting that “Covid-19 does not survive in hot and humid climates” and “black-skinned people are immune to getting the virus”.

d“I want to advise our people that it’s a myth to say that the virus cannot survive in hot climates. We have the same climate and temperatures of Indonesia, Fiji, Singapore and Malaysia and these countries already have the virus,” he said.

“It is also a myth to say that black people can’t get the virus. Even the Africans are being hit by the virus. Countries like Mali, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Nigeria and more are beginning to go into lockdown due to the outbreak of the virus in those countries.”

Mr Parkop emphasised that the best thing to do is to listen to the official information coming out of the national emergency response team (NOC-19) and the official government media channels.

Public updates about the virus have been occurring at 9am, 1pm and 3pm by Minister Kramer and other government officials, which is where the up-to-date information can be gathered.

It is important that the general public consume the correct information especially during a time like this.

The spread of fake news on social media and by word of mouth has the potential to be more dangerous than the actual virus.
