Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has tested negative for coronavirus.

In a statement today, Mr Marape says his was among 121 samples from NCD taken for testing after a public servant was found to have COVID-19 on Thursday.

He says all tests returned negative including that of Emergency Controller David Manning, his deputy acting Health Secretary Dr Paison Dakulala, Health Minister Jelta Wong and Police Minister Bryan Kramer.

Mr Marape says there were also another 16 samples - one from Manus, three from Gulf and 12 from East New Britain, which have all returned negative.

He says over 300 samples collected on Friday including results of five members of the family of the first NCD case will be sent to Brisbane today for testing.

The Prime Minister is appealing to the residents of NCD and the people of Papua New Guinea to remain calm and stay at home to allow the Joint Agency Task Force to continue with contact tracing.

Meanwhile Mr Marape has called on the people for their understanding and cooperation during the State of Emergency.

He says developed countries with better medical facilities have been devasted by the coronavirus and PNG cannot let that happen.

He reiterated that PNG’s health system cannot cope if there's an outbreak that is why the Emergency Controller has issued various directives aimed at stopping the spread of Coronavirus or COVID-19.

Mr Marape says coronavirus is in PNG and all must work now to stop it from spreading.

He says orders have been issued to enforce people to practice health messages.

The orders include limiting the number of passengers on all public transport, all travel in and out of border provinces and provinces with confirmed COVID-19 cases are prohibited, and only cargo and medical personnel are allowed access.

The Prime Minister says the Controller upon advice from the medical team will issue additional orders necessary in the fight against COVID-19.
