PNGTUC calls for Marape-Steven govt for fair distribution of Stimulus Package

Unequal support provided to workers in the private sector during the State of Emergency has been described by PNG Trade Union Congress (TUC) as discriminatory.

This action by the government has left more than 10, 000 workers without jobs and income says TUC General Secretary Clemence Kanau.

Mr. Kanau told a news conference, the government’s lack of support to the private sector is the cause for loss of jobs and income for thousands and workers are also forced to use their earned leave entitlements and superannuation.

He queried if the K5.6 billion stimulus package will capture loss of entitlements for private sector workers.

TUC and PNG Banks and Financial Institution Workers Union Ralph Waiyalaka says the government upon making decisions must look at the best interest of everyone, as these workers and their employers also pay tax.

TUC says there must be a good sharing of the K5.6 billion that covers all sectors.

Meantime, President of National Airline Employees Association Samson Nul says Air Niugini workers have more or less been driven out of society.

Many workers have been forced to use their leave entitlements during this period, which Mr. Nul says is uncalled for.

He questioned why hard working employees are being forced to use their savings.

TUC is now calling on the government to share the stimulus package equally.
