Stop Police Violence and Curfew in the City , says PNG Opposition Leader Namah

Papua New Guinea Opposition calls for stop in Police violence and intimidation during state of Emergency and uplift curfew in the city.  "The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health issue and not a law and order issue! However, around the country police are taking advantage of the SOE to mistreat our people and wreaking havoc on our communities.
Police are destroying the roadside markets of innocent mothers and are using heavy arm tactics on our citizens. They are demanding bribes at roadblocks.

Police are destroying betel-nuts and at the same time involved in illegally smuggling betel-nut and engaging in many violent and illegal acts to extort money. Police are seizing goods from shops and business houses. Police are harassing and assaulting members of the public and confiscating their vehicles for no good reasons. These are reports of widespread violence and abuse by the Police right across the country.

Some Orders under the SOE are unnecessary, as they provide opportunities for rogue police officers to become criminals.

And Marape, Kramer, Wong and Manning have not been doing anything practical to control these unlawful activities carried out by the police and members of the SOE Task Force Team.

Manning must now immediately issue directives to his police officers to adhere to their code of conduct and exercise restraint and refrain from mistreating our citizens. The Controller should now warn his Police personnel to operate within SOE Orders. Any Police personnel who breaches his code of conduct should be penalized. Appropriate penalties for any breaches should include immediate termination from the Police Force.
Why is the SOE Controller being surrounded and controlled by Australian Federal Police Officers? Why is he not working closely with his Deputies and Senior Police Officers within his rank and file in the Royal PNG Constabulary? Are we still under the Australian rule? We are already compromising our sovereignty and national security.
James Marape must now step up and start behaving like a Prime Minister. He must start making strategic and smart decisions. He must bring his Police and Health Ministers under control and put an end to the corruption that is taking place in the Police Force and Health Department under the guise of SOE.

This disaster we are experiencing is bigger than one person's ego, and we must have practical, genuine and experienced leaders in charge of managing this crisis.

I stress again that at this point that the COVIC-19 pandemic is NOT a law and order problem but a health issue that must be addressed with civility and understanding and not to the physical or financial detriment of our citizens".
