PNG Hosts Pacific Police Band Tattoo Amid Regional Security Talks

his weekend, police commissioners and their respective police bands from eight Pacific Island nations will gather in Port Moresby for the inaugural Pacific Police Band Tattoo, an event that blends cultural performance with high-level security dialogue.

Running from Sunday through Tuesday next week, the program promises not only to showcase the rich musical heritage of participating countries but also to serve as a platform for critical discussions on regional law enforcement cooperation.

As part of the visit, senior police officials will convene for a regional meeting focused on transnational crimes such as drug trafficking and illegal firearms smuggling—issues that have increasingly plagued the Pacific region.

Commander Benjamin Turi

Assistant Commissioner of Police and National Capital District/Central Commander Benjamin Turi emphasized the importance of this year’s gathering in addressing shared challenges.

“This meeting is crucial as it highlights some of the major law and order issues in the Pacific, especially those involving drug trafficking and the smuggling of firearms,” Turi said.

He noted that many Pacific nations share maritime borders, making them vulnerable to organized crime networks operating across vast oceanic routes.

“We’ve seen drugs coming from as far as the Americas, passing through Fiji and the Solomons, eventually reaching our shores,” he added.

Turi also raised concerns over the growing use of digital platforms and social media in facilitating criminal activity across the region. He stressed that coordinated efforts among island nations were essential to combat these evolving threats.

While the Pacific Police Band Tattoo stands as a symbol of unity and cultural pride, it will also provide the backdrop for vital conversations aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation.
