Govt to repatriate PNG Citizens from Indonesia
The government will repatriate 123 PNG citizens from Indonesia next week, as COVID-19-related deaths in that country continue to rise.
Fourteen more people have died of the disease in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 845.
National emergency Controller, David Manning said the 760-kilometer border between PNG and Indonesia remains the government's concern.
Whilst the curve of the daily case is flattening at 2.45%, Mr. Manning said the government is taking all precautions at border areas to ensure the virus does not spread over into PNG.
Mr. Manning confirmed that 123 PNG citizens will be repatriated from Jayapura next Wednesday or Thursday.
He said the first lot of 39 PNG citizens will be received at the border by PNG authorities from Vanimo.
Mr. Manning said the group comprises 18 illegal border crossers, 15 PNG citizens with expired visas, and 6 Manus people.
