Hagen Kagamuga Airport Bomb Scare Probe

Investigations will be instituted into the weekend bomb scare at Kagamuga Airport in Western Highlands province.

National Emergency Controller, David Manning said on Saturday, whilst travelling to Mt Hagen onto Porgera, he was informed of a call from an anonymous person threatening to bomb Kagamuga Airport in Mt Hagen.

He said the caller stated that he was not happy with the government and therefore will bomb the Airport and the Air Niugini aircraft that was kept overnight in Mt Hagen.

The same caller also called Heli Solutions in Mt Hagen and made similar threats.

Mr. Manning said the threats were treated seriously, with Kagamuga airport being immediately closed, and passengers stranded.

The Emergency Controller said a Police Bomb Search Unit, including two explosion detection dogs, travelled to Mt Hagen from Port Moresby to investigate and confirmed that the threats were hoax.

Mr. Manning said he's very disappointed, warning that a probe is underway and the prankster will be prosecuted.

The bomb threat left hundreds of passengers bound for Mt Hagen stranded at Jacksons Airport in Port Moresby on Saturday as both Air Niugini and PNG Airlines canceled their flights to Kagamuga airport.

NBC News was at the Jacksons Airport and have witnessed the inconvenience it brought about on the travelling passengers, some already with boarding passes.

A body that was supposed to be uplifted by PNG Air to Mt Hagen was amongst the cargoes off-loaded and taken back to the morgue due to the cancellation of flights.

All flights to Mt Hagen resume the next day.
