K22 Million Goroka Market in Eastern Highlands Completed
THE K22 million newly built Goroka market is completed and ready for opening at a date yet to be confirmed by the Goroka Market Steering Committee.
Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu inspected the refurbished market recently and cut a cake to mark the completion of the market.
During the inspection, Governor Numu thanked the Steering Committee, contractor China Wuyi and Laikos Architects Limited for their hard work in ensuring the completion of the project.
Governor Numu said K18 million was the actual amount of the project however due to variations for car parks, extra fencing, standby generator set and two freezer rooms for meats and vegetables, the amount accumulated up to K22 million.
The Goroka market was rebuilt in 75 weeks and has a total of 115 concrete benches for selling local produce, produces, a mini bank, a police station, hotel standard toilet facilities for men, women and People Living with Disabilities.
The market also has two freezer rooms for storing meats and vegetables, a well-furnished rubbish incinerator, 12 SME rental spaces (fully air conditioned), a multipurpose wing specially designed for displaying and selling arts and crafts and a meat mart right in the heart of the market.

- The meat mart vendors must sell their products in glass-shield containers.
- The toilet facilities will use a pay and use system.
- The undeveloped piece of land at the rear end of the market is for a shopping mall to be built.
- The warehouse also at the rear of the market which has four cool rooms inside will be maintained and used as storage house for local farmers to supply their produce directly to engaged business houses and hotels around the country.
