Murder suspect Kaiwi transferred to Bomana Prison

The suspect in the late Jenelyn Kennedy's death, Bhosip Kaiwi made his first appearance before the Waigani Committal Court this morning where his charges were read out to him by magistrate Tracy Ganaii.

He is charged with wilful murder.

Kaiwi agreed and understood the charges that were read out to him.

The magistrate issued a remand warrant for the defendant to be moved up to Bomana Correctional Service facility.

However, Kaiwi’s lawyer asked the court to allow the defendant to remain at Boroko Police cell and not be transferred to Bomana given the sensitivity around the case and his security.

Magistrate Ganaii while responding to Kaiwi’s lawyer said once the charges are laid, the process is for the defendant to be moved up to Bomana and his lawyer can speak with police or the correctional service to make other arrangements if he feels that his client’s safety is at risk.

Kaiwi's lawyer also asked the court to issue an order to Media and social media to stop the widespread media reports around the case which he claims are disturbing investigations.

Magistrate Ganaii clarified that the court does not have control over social media or mainstream media for that matter, however if anyone is affected by a report, there are laws in place to deal with that separately.

The case has now been adjourned to July 30th 2020 and the Police Prosecutor is expected to provide the status on the investigation by then.
