PNG PM Marape launches Schools of Excellence Policy
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape says the education system should be geared towards harvesting the talent of our young people.
Prime Minister Marape said this today at Port Moresby National High School when launching the Education Department’s National Schools of Excellence Policy:2020 in front of a fullhouse crowd of students, staff and guests.
The policy, which focuses on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), was the brainchild of Prime Minister Marape when he was Education Minister in 2009.
“Our education system must be designed and geared towards harvesting the natural talent, acumen and propensity of the children we have in our schools,” he said.
“Who says the structured, rigid education system that we have is the only way to progress?
“We must be flexible enough to ensure that the child feels that he or she is learning in what he or she is gifted in.
“I want the Education Department to have the versatility to embrace the values of a child, and not the rigidness to chuck our kids out without imparting anything of value to the child.
“Ten years ago, I spoke about the Schools of Excellence, and I am happy that it is progressing in the right direction.”
Department of Education has been tasked to introduce the School of Excellence concept in six National High Schools – Sogeri, Aiyura, Passam, Kerevat, Wawin and Port Moresby – as well as selected secondary schools.
The concept will be implemented under the standing National Executive Council Decision and other National Policies such as the Strategic Development Plan 2030 and Vision 2050.
This is a strategic intervention which is intended to ensure that the middle-tier of the education system starts to produce students who are highly educated, knowledgeable and agile in their abilities to comprehend scientific concepts and improvise to create innovative tools to solve everyday problems.
The development of the policy has been the result of intensive work by the National High School of Excellence Committee, and Technical Consultant on Policy Writing Dr Clement Waine.
