Inquiry into PNG Health Department to be tabled in Parliament
The inquiry into the Department of Health Procurement and Distribution of Drugs will be tabled in Parliament when Parliament resumes on the 25th of August.
Public Accounts Committee Chairman Sir John Pundari said a draft copy of the Report is ready and the committee will finalise the report in three weeks with recommendations.
“We have identified a lot of problems, failures in our systems and we will recommend to parliament as to how we procure and distribute drugs going forward.”
Sir Pundari also stressed the importance of services like health and education which is supposed to be delivered to people free of charge.
“Health and education are basic human rights in this country and we should not continue to profit from these basic services.”
Meanwhile the Public Accounts Committee expressed their disappointment with certain organizations such as the AusAID and the International Dispensary Association for not responding to letters written to them to assist with the Inquiry.
“AusAID has not been able to come before the committee and we understand that but we would have appreciated if they had provided to us some written answers to the questions we asked.”
Sir Pundari said a response would have provided a lot of clarity going forward.
“As a result of AusAID raising certain issues in the open media sometime in the past, this has also resulted in the Committee to embark on this inquiry.”
The Public Accounts Committee is now calling on AusAID and the International Dispensary Association to respond to their letters within three weeks before the Report is tabled in parliament.
“We are sending out letters again, hopefully we will get some responses before our Report to parliament is completed.”
Sir Pundari added that it is hoped the Report will be debated on the floor parliament with a positive outcome that can benefit the people. PNGFM/PNGtoday
