Marape described the conflict as both tragic and unnecessary, saying innocent Palestinians and Israelis continue to suffer. He said the October 7, 2023, massacre was the spark that set off the current war, which has since claimed countless lives.
He stated that Hamas must acknowledge responsibility and take the first step towards peace. He added that PNG’s stand is shaped by its global responsibilities and long friendship with Israel.
According to Marape, Papua New Guinea is prepared to work with Israel and the United Nations in restoring peace and stability, but he stressed that Hamas must act first.
He urged leaders on all sides to prioritize the lives of their people, stop the conflict, and focus on peace and opportunity.
Marape said only by committing to peace can the international community, including PNG, effectively support rebuilding lives and achieving lasting solutions for Israel and Palestine.
