Lombrum Naval Base Redevelopment Strengthens PNG-Australia Defence Ties
Papua New Guinea and Australia have officially completed major upgrades to the Lombrum Naval Base in Manus Province, marking a new chapter in regional security cooperation. The works were delivered under the Lombrum Joint Initiative, led by both countries’ defence organisations, and will boost the PNGDF’s operational capabilities in maritime security and humanitarian response.

Historically significant since World War II, Seeadler Harbor’s natural protection and geography make it an ideal strategic location. Today, the harbor secures the naval base on Los Negros Island, home to PNGDF’s Guardian-class patrol boats provided under Australia’s Pacific Maritime Security Program.
Phase one of the project, launched in 2020, included the refurbishment of community facilities, a new medical centre, security fencing, and communication upgrades. The second phase, which began in 2021, involved overhauling the base’s power supply, water and sewerage systems, road networks, and maritime infrastructure, including barge landing ramps and accommodation facilities.
Australian Defence Force engineers worked side-by-side with PNG technicians and contractors to deliver the project, which meets the highest standards and is built for a lifespan of over two decades with low maintenance.
Officials say the redeveloped base will not only improve PNG’s defence readiness but also allow for enhanced mentoring, tailored training programs, and closer integration with Australian forces in the region.
