South Auckland Doctor Api Talemaitoga says New Zealand needs to be a responsible Pacific neighbour.

"New Zealand should show some leadership as a country, as a Pacific nation and stop the exporting of non-nutritious meat.

"It's really terrible that we're exporting pieces of meat that have more fat in them to make money and take advantage of people that might like it in their diet."

His comments come after the Tongan government announced last month a ban of mutton flaps, which came into effect on July 1st.

This is one of Tonga's government policies to counter the effect of non-communicable diseases.

"The government believes its better to control the consumption of unhealthy food like sweet drinks and mutton flaps which contains too much fat," says Tongan Prime Minister Tu'i'onetoa.

Doctor Talemaitoga agrees the meat contains high fat and "Contributes to diabetes, obesity, heart disease and to a lower life expectancy."

He believes its 'high time' New Zealand shows leadership and follows Tonga's footsteps.
