Akoita justifies his move to the PNG Opposition
The Member for Central Bougainville, Sam Akoitai, says his move across to join the Opposition is a blessing in disguise for Bougainville.
Akoitai, who is a member of the People's National Congress Party, has moved, along with other members of the PNC to join their party leader, former prime minister, Peter O'Neill, following the Marape government's fallout with and ditching of the PNC in late May.
Earlier in June, Prime Minister Marape had ordered the PNC out of government ranks to join the Opposition.
Mr Akoitai revealed to his people in a public meeting in Arawa Wednesday (01.07) that it was not his dream to be in the Opposition to serve them, however, the move is inevitable given the political scenario at the national level.
"All MP's do not want to be in the Opposition, but I must say my move across should be seen as a blessing in disguise for the greater good of Bougainville.
"My presence in the Opposition will help to gather support from my colleagues when it comes to the National Parliament ratifying the results of last year's Referendum.
"We need numbers from both sides of the House, and that is what I want my people to see," Mr Akoitai told The Bougainvillean in an interview.
In 2002, Mr Akoitai and the late former MP and Governor General, Sir Michael Ogio, were in the government when Bougainville President, John Momis and the late former state minister Michael Laimo were in the Opposition, when the National Constitution was ammended to add in Part 14 which contains the establishment of the Bougainville Constitution, the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the Referendum.
Mr Akoitai says he wants to mimic this scenario when Bougainville had members in both sides of the House and had mustered the numbers, from both sides, on the floor, to agree to provisions for a Referendum, provisions for an autonomous government and generally the amendment to Part XIV of the National Constitution.
"This was then, but my recent move across to the Opposition can achieve the same for the greater good of Bougainville."
