Jail Break in PNG leaves 11 dead, 33 on the run
Eleven prisoners are dead and 33 are on the run after Buimo jail break in Morobe province, Papua New Guinea .
This is the second break out this year for the largest correctional institute in the country.
Commissioner of Correctional Services Stephen Pokanis told FM100 news the prisoners got the chance to escape when guards opened the gate for 3 sick prisoners to get treatment from the hospital.“Three are sick and wanted to get treatment at the hospital. However they were not able to get treatment because the court delayed their hearings. Out of frustration they used their condition as an excuse. When guards opened the gate for them, others broke out.”
11 prisoners from the initial 44 were shot dead in their attempt to escape.
“In their attempt to escape, 11 were shot dead,” he said.
Mr. Pokanis said they are working to establish the whereabouts of the 33 escapees.
