No Lockdown Extension, Schools to Reopen, says PM Marape
PNG PRIME Minister James Marape has announced that the 14-day lockdown will not be extended when it ends today.
He said this to clear speculation on social and mainstream media that the lockdown would continue.
Mr Marape announced also that schools would be reopened for classes next week.He urged all schools to prepare for the reopening but to continue to adhere to all Covid-19 protocols and guidelines to ensure that there is a safe environment for students to return to.
Schools, he said, must have proper wash basins and masks must be worn at all schools, including in tertiary institutions. Mr Marape said funds will continue to roll out through the districts to help schools set up the Covid-19 hand-wash and related facilities.
In relation to the recent call out of the PNG Defence Force to help in the security aspect of the Covid-19 operations, he said, soldiers would operate as public relations agents and ensure there was crowd control at places like bus stops and markets to ensure the people complied with physical distancing and other Covid-19 requirements.
Mr Marape said soldiers were not being called out because of a war but to ensure Covid-19 protocols are being followed through.
