PNG Records 6th COVID-19 Death
Papua New Guinea has recorded another death from coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the total confirmed deaths to six.
A 39-year old female from the National Capital District (NCD) died on the 6th of September at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
Meanwhile, two additional COVID-19 cases were also confirmed today from NCD, bringing the total cases for the country to 510.
A 27-year old female administrative worker is one of the confirmed cases who got tested at St John Ambulance Drive-Thru Testing Center at Taurama. She was swabbed on 7th September after experiencing influenza-like illness, headaches and chills.
The other new case is a 26-year old lawyer who resides at Hohola. He got swabbed at Rita Flynn Isolation Facility for work clearance on the 7th September.
NCD is experiencing community transmission even though the cases reported seem to be sporadic due to low testing rates.
In light of the rise in the new case, Controller of the National Pandemic Response Mr David Manning has strongly called on residents to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols as there are evidences of community transmission.
Mr Manning further called for more testing to be done throughout the country.
To date, cases have been reported from 13 provinces in the country: NCD (299); Western Province (185); Central (7); Morobe (5); East Sepik (3); East New Britain (2); West New Britain (2); Milne Bay (2); and one case each from Southern Highlands, Eastern Highlands, West Sepik, New Ireland and Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
So far, the majority of the cases are mild and moderate.
Globally, the total confirmed cases are now 28,634,766 and the death toll stands at 918,762. There was an increase of 297,762 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.
In the Western Pacific region, a total of 16 countries/territories had confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases for the region to 541,034 cases and 11,658 deaths.
