PNG Reports First Pregnant Woman with COVID-19
Papua New Guinea reported its first case of COVID-19 in a pregnant woman, last month.
National Operation Centre Incident Manager Dr. Esorom Daoni said, the woman while initially testing positive had her other test results returning negative.
Dr. Daoni said, she presented at the Tuberculosis ward at the Port Moresby General Hospital, with TB of the spine and also displaying symptoms of the virus and was detected and diagnosed.
He however said, while her other test results have come back negative, her baby's results are yet to be verified as she is yet to give birth.
“Globally, in the UK, two mothers who were positive with COVID-19 while pregnant gave birth to babies who also tested positive.
“However, the outcome or malformations which come with the virus are yet to be known,” Dr. Daoni said.
He added, COVID-19 is a new virus and much is yet to be known about it - including the case of pregnant mothers and their unborn babies.
