PNG's West New Britain Province records new cases of COVID-19, Confirmed cases rise to 479

West New Britain Province has become the 12th province in the country to report a coronavirus disease 2019 in the last 24 hours.

It has reported for the first time two new cases of COVID-19 along with the National Capital District which reported 9, bringing its total confirmed cases to 284.

In recording their first two cases, West New Britain has since commenced contact-tracing on contacts of the two reported positive cases.

West New Britain is one of the provinces that had not sent samples for

testing last month so this is a wake-up call for the province to do more.

With 11 cases reported today, the country’s total confirmed cases have gone up to 479.

Of this figure, 232 recovered; 5 died and 234 are still active.

Controller of the National Pandemic Response Mr David Manning said unlike some diseases, with COVID-19 the recoveries go on to live normal lives as before.

“I appeal to everyone to avoid stigmatising people who contract COVID-19. We know from experience from other countries that once someone has recovered, she or he does not have the virus anymore,’’ he said.

Furthermore, he said, the active cases are monitored at the health and isolation facilities until they are well and free of the virus before they are discharged.

Meanwhile, Western Pacific Region where PNG sits has reported a total of 4,518 cases from 11 countries in the last 24 hours and 63 deaths in five countries.

The deaths were from Australia (5), Hong Kong (1), Japan (17), Malaysia (1) and Philippines (39).

In the ocean region, there are 190 new cases which are Australia (73), Fiji (1), French Polynesia (91), New Zealand (14) and PNG (11).

Indonesia has reported 2,775 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total confirmed cases to 177,571.

Eighty-eight (88) more people have died of the disease in that country in the last 24 hours, bringing its death toll to 7,505.

Two provinces that share the border with PNG – Papua and West Papua- have each reported 66 and 24 new cases bringing the total confirmed cases to 4,693 and a death toll of 59, of which 3 were from the last 24 hours.

Globally, the total confirmed cases are now 25,889,077 and a death toll of 860, l265. In the past 24 hours, there was an increase of 256,990.

“Once again, I urge everyone to continue to be vigilant to protect themselves and others from coronavirus.

“If you do not care, just take a few seconds to think of what your actions might do to someone you love. Simple actions of health protocols are not painful, but the inaction could be, so be responsible.

“Together we can stop the spread of COVID-19 in our country," Mr Manning said.
