PNG's Kavieng Airport Landowners to continue protest despite Government's commitment of K3 million payment
KAVIENG AIRPORT LANDOWNERS TO CONTINUE PROTEST
Landowners of the Kavieng Airport in Papua New Guinea say the sit-in protest will continue until and unless the concerned authorities give them a favorable response.
The landowners have demanded the National Government and National Airports Cooperation to respond to their call to settle the outstanding compensation payment on the Kavieng Airport redevelopment project.
Chairperson of the landowners’ group, Gayleen Moni told NBC News that to date no payment has been made so far.
They were issued a cheque of the amount in July 2020, which bounced back.
The sit-in protest at the Kavieng airport began on Monday as the landowners claim they are yet to receive a response from the NAC and Government on the K3million commitment made by Prime Minister, James Marape last year and other demands of the landowners.
Marape made the commitment and presented a dummy cheque of K3 million to the landowners during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kavieng Airport extension in July last year.
Prime Minister James Marape, Treasurer, and Kavieng MP Ian Ling-Stuckey are expected to address the concerns of the disgruntled Kavieng airport landowners soon.
Meantime, flights are operating as normal in and out of the province.
