Chief Justice Sir Salika says Number of PNG judges will increase
The total number of judges in PNG will be increased from the current ceiling of 40 to 60 judges.
Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika said that the Judicial Legal Service Commission has approved their submission, and the Chairman who is also the Justice Minister will present it to the National Executive Council for its approval.
Sir Gibbs made this announcement during the swearing in of three new judges this morning at the Government House.
The two substantive Judges are Jacinta Murray and Justice Paulus Doa, who have each signed a contract of 10 years, while Acting Judge Elizabeth Sue Lip signed a contract of 12 months.
The Judicial and Legal Services Commission appointed the three judges on the 27th of January this year to the National and Supreme Courts.
Chief justice Sir Gibbs said the appointment of these three judges now brings the total number of judges to 45 currently, and this includes himself and the Deputy Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi.
He further said more judges will be appointed once Cabinet gives its approval to increase the total number from 45 to 60 in the future.
