ABG President conveys Condolences

Bougainville President Ishmael Toroama has joined other leaders in Papua New Guinea to convey his condolences to the family and relatives of the Late Grand Chief Sir Micahel Thomas Somare of his passing.

President Toroama says Sir Michael had a close relationship with Bougainville which dates back to the days when PNG and Bougainville sought independence from the colonial master, Australia.

The president says it was through this association that Sir Michael forged life-long relationships with Bougainville’s early leaders like Sir Paul Lapun, Sir Donatus Mola, Raphael Bele, and Chief Dr. John Momis.

''As President, I pay my special tribute to Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare contributions to the Bougainville Peace process during the difficult years of Bougainville Crisis.

''Sir Michael played an important role in the negotiations.

''In 2002 when he became the Prime Minister of PNG once again he continued to implement the Bougainville peace agreement, Sir Michael oversaw the formation of the Autonomous Bougainville  Government. And on behalf of my family the people of Bougainville, and the Autonomous Bougainville Government I would like to convey my sincere condolences to the family of late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare,'' said ABG President.
