Cyclone Niran to affect Southern PNG

CYCLONE NIRAN TO AFFECT GULF, CENTRAL AND MILNE BAY PROVINCE

The PNG National Weather Service has announced it is currently monitoring cyclone Niran which developed off the North Queensland coast and is currently moving slowly northeast,

Duty Weather Forecaster Peter Warupi says the cyclone will affect the Gulf, Central and Milne Bay provinces.

The tropical low off the north Queensland coast has developed into Tropical cyclone and was named Niran by the Brisbane Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre.

The cyclone Niran is expected to continue intensifying over the next day or two.

Mr. Warupi says, gales with gusts to 100km/h may develop about coastal and island communities between Kerema and Alotau late this evening or during Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain has eased along the north tropical coast, but may redevelop late this evening or during Wednesday in the warning.

Mr. Warupi says, several flood warnings are current for inland Western, Central, Milne Bay, Madang, East & West New Britain Provinces.

Meanwhile, abnormally high tides and large waves may cause minor flooding near the foreshore.

People likely to be affected should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to help their neighbors.
