Vanuatu Remembers Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare
PORT VILA, VANUATU (5 March 2021): In a show of solidarity with the Government and People of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Honourable Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Vanuatu Hon. Ismael Kalsakau, MP today officially marked the "Calling Forth" of the week-long “Haus Krai” to honor the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, Founding Father of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea and one of the Founding Fathers of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.
An area has been especially demarcated as the Haus Krai at the MSG Secretariat for the public to pay their respects to the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare.
The Haus Krai is a symbol of grief and a location specifically chosen where People gather to mourn the passing of a loved one in the Papua New Guinean culture.
The public are encouraged to visit the MSG Secretariat to lay wreaths and sign the Condolence book. The Haus Krai will remain open until Friday 12 of March.
