US Commits Addition K7.1 Million to Assist PNG COVID-19 Response
The United States has announced an additional K7.1 million to support PNG's fight COVID-19 Pandemic.
The US Embassy in Port Moresby announced the commitment, through the United States Agency for International Development.
Working in partnership with UNICEF, World Health Organization, and FHI 360, USAID will support vaccine deployment, as well as emergency response efforts.
This raises the U.S. government assistance to nearly K25 million.
US Ambassador to PNG, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu Erin McKee say the pandemic has demonstrated that an infectious disease outbreak anywhere is a threat to people everywhere adding that the contribution, together with the delivery on April 13 of 132,000 COVAX vaccine doses through the COVAX Facility will advance the protection of Papua New Guineans and begin to put an end to COVID-19 in the country.
USAID will support the national government in risk communications and community engagement, training for front-line medical personnel, and service delivery activities to support vaccine deployment.
