Port Moresby Governor Parkop Gives back to UPNG

In a big boost to the University of Papua New Guinea, NCD Governor Powes Parkop officially handed over the new dormitory keys to the UPNG Vice Chancellor Professor Frank Griffin today at UPNG Campus.


The new dormitory is expected to accommodate three hundred more boarders, come 2022 academic year. With seventy-five twin share rooms, 150 beds and 2 study tables in each room, the new space will be a conducive living and learning environment for students. 

The dormitory is funded by the National Government and National Capital District Commission at the cost of K17.5 million.

Given the space limitations faced by the University, Professor Griffin welcomed the handover of keys to the new dormitory.

“We want to thank NCDC and the good Governor Parkop in investing in this way to help our young get better education,” Griffin said.

He said the University is the happy recipient of the building that has been that has gone through rigorous processes of designing, tendering, construction, building under full scrutiny of NCDC.

Governor Parkop said this dormitory will allow students to have a good living environment so that they can study well and achieve their dreams.

“They have to be in a conducive environment so they can go out and face all the challenges in the world and also contribute to our nation,” Governor Parkop said.

Governor Parkop said the premier university has served our country well and NCDC will continue investing in it, so that young, smart people graduate and help build Papua New Guinea. 

The construction of the new dormitory is an agreement between NCDC and UPNG after the National Government and NCDC took the university land to build the new Morata-Gerehu Road.

City Manager Bernard Kipit stated that NCDC will be in partnership with the university in terms of infrastructure development.

“We will continue to give our support in terms of infrastructure developments to ensure students have resources backing them up,” Mr. Kipit said.
