PNG Receives More COVID-19 Vaccines Johnson & Johnson From The United States

Papua New Guinea has received over 300 000 Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine doses from the United States.


US President Joe Biden on June 3rd announced the US would share at least 80 million of its vaccine supply to the world.

The shipment to PNG at the weekend is part of that.

The Government had requested critical assistance to address the COVID-19 situation in Papua New Guinea resulting in a response from the US government.

About 302,400 doses of the Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccine arrived in Port Moresby through the COVAX facility, to assist Papua New Guinea fight coronavirus.

PNG already has AstraZeneca and China’s Sinopharm which is being administered to frontline workers and citizens, and now Johnson & Johnson. 

U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, Erin McKee, and Controller of the National Pandemic Response, David Manning, were among dignitaries at the Jacksons International Airport to receive the vaccine doses.

Ambassador McKee said the United States is honoured to support the PNG Government lessen the impacts of COVID-19.  

The US has previously delivered more than 5,000 GeneXpert cartridges to assist with COVID-19 patient identification and contribute to nationwide testing data.

This assistance was funded through the USAID COVID-19 Response in PNG Activity.

To date, the U.S. government has provided $35 million in direct COVID-19 relief and recovery assistance to the Pacific Islands region since the start of the pandemic.
