Marape Government's move to cut Tax, a joke of the century : PNG Trade Union |
Union President, John Paska said this in a statement when responding to the 10% GST cuts announced in Parliament last week.
Treasurer Ian Ling Stuckey, tabled the Income Tax Amendment Bill following a cabinet decision in consideration of the high costs of goods and services due to COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Mr. Paska has questioned the government on its decision on how it will release more cash into the country’s economy to ease inflation.
He says the Treasurer Ian Ling Stuckey has failed to advise the Prime Minister well when announcing the 10% cuts on fuel and other consumable items in shops.
While this is good news for ordinary citizens, TUC fears reducing the GST will simply open up another wound in the coffers of Urban Local Level governments, who frame their budgets around GST remittances. Therefore, the Union will not support the GST cuts.
