PNG Opposition goes to court over creation of 7 New Electorates
The Papua New Guinea Opposition has sought legal advice to stay the creation of the 7 new electorates.
Leader Belden Namah stressed that the issue of writs will be issued in three weeks' time and questioned the timing of the re-distribution of electorates.
The new electorates for voting in 2022 NGE that were announced by PNG Parliament are :
1. Kairuku and Hiri split
2. Talasea and Nakanai split
3. Bulolo Wau split
4. Ijivitari Popondetta split
5. North Fly and Delta Fly Split
6. Komo and Magarima split
7. Pogera and Liagap split
Mr Namah says the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission will now be confused to come up with a common roll for each of the new electorates.
Meantime, Chief Commissioner, Simon Sinai in a press conference says the common roll will not be affected as it is based on the Council Wards.
Mr. Sinai says no Council Wards were created, the 6375 wards still remain.
He adds that 331 Local Level Governments remain also and budgets have been factored in.
The Electoral Commissioner says the Commission is prepared to run the national election with the additional electorates.
