PNG soldiers to be deployed to remote Madang

A platoon of soldiers from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force will be in the Raikos District of Madang Province for the duration of the polling period.

Assistant Police Commissioner Northern Command, Peter Guinness said due to ongoing criminal activities of the Het Wara Gang in the Naiyudo Local Level Government area, the soldiers will be assisting policemen deployed to the area.

ACP Guinness said a squad from the Northern Mobile Group will also be in Madang to help provide election security.

He also indicated the possibility of re-deploying CS personnel, who arrived in Madang from Port Moresby.

Mr. Guiness said election security is very important, and with ongoing lawlessness in the area by the so-called Het Wara gang, the government is taking no chances and must make sure that people are safe during polling to exercise their freedom to vote.

People in this remote area have raised concerns about election security following threats issued by the gang to disturb the election process.

ACP Guiness said a squad from the Northern Mobile Group will also be in Madang to help provide election security.
